Will Australia rise up to Japan's Carbon Reduction challenge at Copenhagen?
Two weeks ago India’s environment minister, Jairem Ramesh, challenged the developed world to call his country’s bluff by offering more substantial emissions’ cuts. Now Japan's new incoming Prime Minister, Mr Hatoyama, pledged to cut emissions by 25 per cent from 1990 levels by 2020. "This sets developed economies a very high ambition level", says Nav Brah of NCS International. Japan's previous government only committed to an 8 per cent cut. Japan's leadership on climate action, despite the current weakness in its economy, is a welcome move from the world’s second-largest economy.
Nav Brah says Japan’s move will put greater pressure on Australia for a meaningful result at the Copenhagen climate summit in December. It will remove an excuse for nations like Australia and the US that are still seen to be dragging their feet on emissions’ targets. The question we now ask is will Australia push its emissions reduction target closer to the top end of its stated 5-25 per cent range?
