France's new carbon tax may impact Australian export industries

France is the largest economy set to introduce a new carbon tax  on oil, gas and coal consumption by households and businesses to help fight global warming. At the G20 summit in New York last week, French President , Nicolas Sarkozy called for a national "carbon tax" on global-warming pollutants and a European levy on imports from countries outside the Kyoto Protocol.  Any such carbon tax, if adopted by the EU, is likely to adversely affect exports from Australia to Europe. The French carbon tax of around $30 is likely to take effect in 2010.
